- The End of the Line
By Peter Boden 18. FAREWELL TO CHILDHOOD. Click on images to enlarge I attended Shortacre High School until the summer term 1933. All boys of my age were then driven out of that cosy school. We felt guilty; what had we done wrong? My last report, on 14th September 1933, looked quite good to me (Illus. 26). After the
final day I was put on a tram at the “Horse & Farrier”,
and travelled the line to
Mersey Square, Stockport. Here I had to change to another tram for
Hazel Grove and got off at Dialstone Lane. There I passed through
stone portals, and started my first day at the “big” grammar
school. They were not interested in needlework, country dancing or
elocution and there were no girls! But that is another story! I was
eight years old. Peter Boden |
